skin conditions

OILINESS

The amount of oil your skin secretes is genetically determined, but you can use products such as a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer to help manage your oil production. Keeping skin clean, avoiding alcohol-based cleansers, and applying an SPF can also help control oil

DEHYDRATION

When your skin is dehydrated, it lacks water. A lack of water can be caused by cleansers and toners that strip skin of moisture, over exfoliating, not drinking enough water, and environmental fluctuations. But here’s where it gets tricky: when skin is dehydrated, it produces more oil to compensate for its lack of moisture. Skin can even feel oily and dry at the same time. Therefore, dehydrated skin requires water-based products that focus on replenishing moisture rather than oil.

BREAKOUT ACTIVITY

Subsurface bumps which can be red and inflamed.

While teenagers typically get breakouts due to hormonal changes that come with puberty, adults get breakouts due to both internal factors (originating in the body) such as genetics, and external factors (coming from outside the body) such as lifestyle. Among adults, breakouts tend to be more cyclical and painful, with lesions located around the mouth, chin and jaw. When targeting adult breakouts, look for multi-functional products that not only target breakouts, but also brighten, smooth and restore skin.

WRINKLES

Wrinkles are the result of genetically-programmed changes (internal factors) and environmental wear-and-tear (external factors). While both influence the skin, exposure to UV rays causes most wrinkles and the loss of skin elasticity. Recently, scientists have come to understand the actual biochemical triggers that instigate these changes, which is key to treating signs of premature aging. Look for combinations of Age-Fighting Ingredients, such as Peptides, Retinoids and Antioxidant Vitamins.

EYES

The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate, which means it’s extra susceptible and more likely to be the first place to show any signs of skin damage caused by environmental assaults. When combined with lack of sleep, stress, and aging, this can lead to puffiness, fine lines, and dark circles. Look for multi-functional products that can simultaneously address these concerns.

PIGMENTATION

Uneven skin tone is a top concern because when skin is uneven it’s often perceived as “aged skin.” When treating uneven skin, success largely depends on identifying the cause of discoloration. Is it due to UV exposure? Trauma or acne? Hormones? Uneven skin tone induced by UV rays or injury tends to respond well to treatment if caught early. Regularly applying a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen of SPF 50 is critical for preventing new Hyperpigmentation, as is exfoliating and using skin brightening agents with Vitamin C.

REDNESS / SENSITIVITY

If you’re prone to redness, you may have sensitive skin, which is a genetic condition, or you could have sensitized skin caused by exposure to pollution, stress, chemicals, allergens, or dehydration. Regardless of whether you have sensitive skin or sensitized skin, the common thread between both conditions is inflammation. Recent studies reveal that combining specific active botanicals (e.g. ginger and oat kernel) can help control inflammation, irritation, and redness.
